TrestleTree believes that long-term, sustained behavior change is achievable for everyone, regardless of their level of motivation or readiness to change. TrestleTree's program is based on the application of the research on helping people make and sustain long-term behavior changes to facilitate improved health.

Health Coaching Philosophy

  • Uniquely tailor interventions to match each individual participant's needs, health and life story (family, financial, cultural, occupational), and readiness/motivation to change

  • Move each individual participant toward pragmatic achievement of evidence-based medicine guidelines

  • Provide the same high-quality, targeted and intensive coaching to all individuals

  • More than dissemination of health information, advice and accountability

  • Build relationships of trust and earn the right to influence tangible and sustainable behavioral change

  • Work effectively and efficiently with all individuals regardless of readiness to change, their belief that they can change or their lack of understanding how to initiate change, in order to facilitate lasting health behavior change

Foundation

  • Based upon nationally recognized evidence- based medicine guidelines

  • Built upon the foundation of the Transtheoretical Model (Prochaska, DiClemente, & Norcross, 1992)

  • Additional well-established and empirically sound theoretical models

    • Social Learning Theory (Bandura, 1977, or social cognitive theory)

    • The Health Belief Model (Rosenstock, 1966)

    • Self-efficacy Theory (Bandura, 1996)

    • Theories of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1985)

    • Learning Theories Related to Contingencies and Reinforcement

    • Relapse Prevention Model (Marlatt & Gordon, 1985)

    • Motivational Interviewing (Miller, 1983)

Coaching Process

  • Whole person approach

    • Many health behaviors are intertwined

    • Greater change achieved when focusing on more than one behavior at a time

  • Conversation that draws out the health story through active listening

  • Not scripted, so TrestleTree Health Coaches can meet the needs of each individual participant in a highly personalized manner

    • Engage the participant to better understand the participant's current goals, barriers to change, successes, needs and where they are in the change process

    • "Match" participants and help them "move" toward their goals

  • Elements of the process

    • Connecting/understanding the participant's current state

    • Ongoing diagnosis of readiness to change

      • Not as a filter to decide who "qualifies" for the program

      • Used to uniquely tailor coaching to each individual

    • Providing strategies to help participants meet their goals

    • Looking ahead

  • Multi-behavioral focus

  • All participants, regardless of the program they enroll in, work on multiple goal areas

    • Lifejoy - regular engagement in meaningful and stress-reducing activities

  • As appropriate to the given program and presenting problems, other goal areas may include

    • Medication adherence

    • Disease state monitoring adherence

    • Tobacco cessation

    • Weight loss

    • Stress management

    • Goals related to the family (family food, family fitness and family fun)
